Installing rooftop solar changes more than where your electricity comes from. It also changes how electricity moves between your property, your solar system and the electricity grid.
During sunny hours, your rooftop solar system generates electricity that can be used by appliances operating inside your home or business. When generation is higher than your immediate electricity requirement, surplus electricity may flow to the grid under the applicable grid-connected metering arrangement.
At night, during periods of lower solar generation, or whenever your electricity demand is higher than the solar system's current output, your property may draw electricity from the grid.
This means that after installing solar, there are several different numbers to understand: total solar generation, electricity used directly from solar, electricity imported from the grid and electricity exported to the grid.
Understanding these differences can make your post-solar electricity bill much easier to interpret.
Three Electricity Flows to Understand After Installing Solar
1. Solar Electricity Used Directly
The most straightforward use of rooftop solar happens when your panels are generating electricity at the same time your property is consuming it.
Suppose your solar system is producing electricity during the afternoon while your air conditioner, refrigerator, water pump, computers or other appliances are operating. Part of that electricity can be consumed directly inside the property.
This is often called self-consumption.
Electricity used directly from solar reduces the amount of electricity that needs to be drawn from the grid at that moment.
For businesses, daytime loads may include office equipment, lighting, cooling, pumps, machinery or other operational equipment. Because many businesses operate during daylight hours, their consumption pattern can be an important factor when planning rooftop solar.
2. Electricity Exported to the Grid
There may also be times when your rooftop solar system generates more electricity than the property is using.
Imagine your panels are generating strongly during the afternoon but only a few appliances are operating. After the property's immediate electricity requirement is met, surplus electricity may be exported to the distribution grid under the applicable metering arrangement.
A bidirectional or net meter records relevant electricity flows between the consumer and the grid.
The exact treatment of exported electricity depends on the applicable regulations, metering arrangement, consumer category and DISCOM rules in force for the connection.
3. Electricity Imported From the Grid
Solar panels do not produce electricity continuously throughout the entire day.
At night there is no solar generation. Generation can also be lower during cloudy conditions, and your property's demand can sometimes exceed what the solar system is producing at that moment.
When additional electricity is required, it can be supplied by the grid.
Electricity drawn from the distribution grid is generally referred to as imported electricity.
What Do Import and Export Units Mean?
Once rooftop solar is connected to the grid, two terms become particularly important.
Import Units
Import units represent electricity drawn from the grid by your property.
For example, if your home requires more electricity in the evening than was available directly from solar at that time, the required electricity may come from the grid.
Export Units
Export units represent surplus electricity delivered from the solar property to the grid under the applicable metering arrangement.
The important point is that import and export describe electricity exchanged with the grid. They are not the same as the total amount of electricity generated by your solar panels.
The applicable DISCOM metering and settlement rules determine how these readings are treated when the electricity bill is prepared.

A Simple Example of Electricity Flow After Solar
Consider a Jaipur home with a grid-connected rooftop solar system.
In the morning, the panels begin generating electricity. The refrigerator, fans, water pump and other active appliances use part of this solar electricity directly.
Around midday, solar generation may become higher than the home's immediate consumption. Depending on the approved metering arrangement, the surplus may flow to the grid.
In the evening, solar generation reduces while household electricity use may increase. The home can then draw the required electricity from the grid.
Over the billing period, different energy flows have therefore taken place:
- the solar system generated electricity;
- some solar electricity was consumed directly;
- some surplus may have been exported;
- and electricity was imported whenever grid supply was required.
This is why understanding a solar electricity bill requires more than looking at one generation number.
Does Solar Mean Your Electricity Bill Will Become Zero?
Not necessarily.
A properly planned rooftop solar system can substantially reduce dependence on electricity purchased from the grid, but installing solar should not automatically be interpreted as a guarantee of a zero total electricity bill.
The final bill can depend on several factors, including:
- your total electricity consumption;
- the size of the solar system;
- actual solar generation;
- how much solar electricity you consume directly;
- electricity imported from the grid;
- electricity exported to the grid;
- your consumer and tariff category;
- applicable fixed, minimum or other charges; and
- the DISCOM rules applicable to your connection.
Two homes with the same solar capacity can therefore have different electricity bills.
The objective should be to plan a solar system around the property's actual consumption and usage pattern rather than assuming that a particular system size will automatically eliminate the entire bill.
Why Daytime Electricity Consumption Matters
When you use electricity while your panels are producing it, the generated electricity can be consumed directly at your property.
Consider two Jaipur homes with similar monthly electricity consumption.
The first household uses a significant amount of electricity during the day for cooling, appliances, pumps and work-from-home equipment.
The second household is mostly empty during daylight hours and consumes much more electricity in the evening.
Their monthly consumption may look similar on an electricity bill, but the way each home interacts with a rooftop solar system can be different.
This is one reason system planning should look beyond only the final rupee amount shown on the electricity bill.
Solar Generation Is Not the Same as Export
This is one of the most common points of confusion after installing rooftop solar.
Your inverter or solar monitoring application may show the total electricity generated by the solar system.
That does not mean the same amount of electricity was exported to the grid.
Part of the electricity generated by the panels may have been consumed immediately inside your property.
Conceptually, solar generation can be thought of as electricity used directly at the property plus any surplus electricity that flows outward under the installed configuration.
This is why the generation figure shown in a solar monitoring application and the export reading associated with the grid meter may be different.
They are measuring different parts of the property's electricity flow.

Why Solar Generation Changes From Month to Month
A rooftop solar system should not be expected to generate exactly the same amount of electricity every day or every month.
Generation can change because of:
- seasonal sunlight conditions;
- cloud cover;
- monsoon weather;
- module temperature;
- dust accumulation;
- shading;
- panel orientation;
- maintenance condition; and
- site-specific conditions.
Your electricity consumption can change at the same time.
For example, cooling requirements may increase substantially during Jaipur's hotter months, while household usage may be different during other parts of the year.
This is why one isolated electricity bill does not always provide a complete picture of system performance.

- electricity imported from the grid;
- electricity exported to the grid;
- your current electricity consumption;
- electricity bills from before solar;
- electricity bills after solar;
- seasonal differences; and
- changes in appliance usage.
Comparing these together gives you a much clearer understanding of how rooftop solar is affecting your electricity use.
Why Correct Solar System Sizing Matters
The right solar capacity is not simply the largest system that can physically fit on a roof.
Planning should consider:
- historical electricity consumption;
- daytime electricity demand;
- available shadow-free rooftop area;
- roof orientation and obstructions;
- sanctioned electrical load;
- residential or commercial usage;
- possible future electricity requirements; and
- applicable grid requirements.
